The New Orleans Museum of Art frequently has opportunities for a limited number of students to gain valuable experiences by serving as interns in various Museum departments. The internship program is designed to provide undergraduate and graduate students from colleges and universities with educational on-site exposure to daily museum practices at NOMA.

Interns are expected to assume museum responsibilities and demonstrate individual initiative. The supervisor in turn is responsible for providing thorough supervision, guidance and evaluation.

Interns will gain exposure by working in a least one of NOMA’s departments — Administration, Curatorial, Development or Education. Because of their educational background, interns should be prepared to assume specialized duties and to contribute at an important level in the Museum. In addition, interns should become acquainted with the functioning of NOMA as a whole and its cultural importance within the city of New Orleans.

In general, interns are required to work a minimum of seven to ten hours per week for approximately fourteen weeks during the academic year. NOMA, however, responds to the credit requirements as determined by universities and schools and can be flexible. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Internships may be divided between either the fall or spring semesters. Summer internships are also available.

Students interested in applying for a spring 2011 semester internship should contact Rachel Strassel, Public Program Assistant, at 504.658.4159 or rstrassel@noma.org no later than December 1, 2010. Students will be matched according to the needs of the Museum as the applications are submitted. Please be advised that NOMA gives top priority to those students who are juniors, seniors or graduate students. Applications will be considered after Dec. 1 if opportunities still exist.

Applicants will need to provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae or resume, a potential contact from the university or prior employer for a verbal recommendation if requested, and a copy of a recent transcript. Those students who are accepted into the program are required to attend a brief informational session before the start of their internship and will benefit from invitations to presentations on the Museum’s collection.
