OVERVIEW
Under the direction of the Proofreading Supervisor, supports Creative team by proofreading all advertising copy and thus contributes to achieving client advertising objectives, resulting in profit for the agency and strong and lasting agency/client relationships. Protects agency reputation by ensuring that all advertising copy is grammatically correct and free from errors in spelling, spacing, punctuation, and typography.
The Proofreader/Copy Editor:
•Checks advertising copy for correctness in grammar, spelling, spacing, and punctuation.
•Checks advertising copy for other quality characteristics as requested; for example, check facts, verify content, copy edit.
•Assists Writers and Account Service team in checking advertising copy for style as per client guidelines and in checking against client-approved rough copy.
•Communicates with Creative and Project Management about status of advertising projects.
•Facilitates meeting project deadlines through timely performance of proofing duties.
•Is receptive to other departmental and team members in matters of communication and execution of assignments.
•Takes responsibility for larger job, not only for his or her part of it.
REGULAR DUTIES
•Proof advertising copy. Indicate and correct all errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and spacing. Confer with Writers, Art Directors, and Account Service team to gain approval of changes made/suggested.
•Follow up on approved changes. Assist Project Management in expediting changes when necessary.
•Follow up on questionable or problematic copy. Take initiative in consulting Writers, Art Directors, Account Service team, and reference materials for grammar, spelling, usage, style, and factual information as necessary.
•Communicate regularly with Project Management. Assist Project Management in meeting deadlines.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
•College degree in Liberal Arts, preferably English
Experience
•Two years proofreading experience in advertising or related industry preferred
Knowledge
•Basic proofreading principles and practices
•Extensive knowledge of grammar and syntax
•Extensive general knowledge; extensive knowledge of local culture, history, and geography
•Research principles and practices; other languages helpful
Skills
•Interpersonal and written communication
•Excellent reading
•Excellent research
Some overtime may be required.
