General Position Overview:
KIPP New Orleans is seeking a Payroll/Accounting Specialist who will be responsible for ensuring accurate processing and recording of payroll, and providing timely and accurate financial information for all KIPP schools.

KIPP New Orleans Schools is a fast-growing network of open-enrollment, public, college-preparatory charter schools. The mission of KIPP New Orleans Schools is to create an influential network of public schools that gives students the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in competitive high schools, colleges and the world beyond. KIPP New Orleans Schools currently operates seven schools in the Recovery School District serving over 1,500 students from grades Pre-Kindergarten to ninth grade. With plans to open two new elementary schools in the fall of 2011, KIPP New Orleans Schools will eventually serve over 2,200 students.

With longer school days, innovative teaching, and a motivating learning environment, we are working to ensure that all of our students are prepared for college and beyond. KIPP students are assigned homework every night, and KIPP teachers are available by cell phone to assist as necessary. KIPP schools in New Orleans embrace the spirit of New Orleans with band, visual arts, or other fine arts available at every school.

KIPP New Orleans Schools is associated with the national KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) Network, which recruits and trains school leaders to open KIPP schools across the country. The KIPP network is rapidly growing; there are currently 98 KIPP schools in 19 states, serving around 20,000 students.

Qualifications:
• Previous payroll experience required
ADP Certified Payroll Specialist (CPS) required
• Prior accounting experience required, CPA a plus
• Proficient in use of accounting software required, Quickbooks a plus
• Proficient in Word, Excel and Outlook
• Flexible and adaptable to succeed in a growing and dynamic decentralized environment
• Self-motivated and aware to identify problems and areas for improvement and act on those, with the input of managers as needed
• Strong oral and written communication skills

Payroll Responsibilities:
• Manage payroll for all KIPP schools and School Support Center
• Maintain complete and accurate information in payroll system
• Submit payroll for salaried and hourly employees
• Monitor processing status to ensure payroll runs successfully on time
• Resolve any system issues with payroll service
• Review payroll reports for accuracy
• Ensure payroll activity is properly & accurately downloaded into financial software
• Work with Business Operations Managers and other KIPP staff to resolve questions about pay rates, hours, deductions, etc.

Accounting responsibilities:
• Master QuickBooks or other accounting software
• Assist in conversion to new accounting software
• Assist Accounting Manager in reconciling accounts and preparing account analysis
• Prepare daily/weekly reports of cash management activity for review by Accounting Manager
• Act as back up for Accounts Payable Accountant
• Record deposits and bank transfers accurately in accounting system
• Make journal entries as needed for receivables, disbursements on state grants, shared expenses, payroll expense, etc.
• Ad hoc reporting for internal and external purposes
• Assist with annual financial audit

Compensation:
• Salary is based on the public school pay scale in New Orleans, with additional compensation for the extra hours required. Competitive benefits package including health coverage and retirement.
