Have fun, educate, and aid in the rebuilding of a new and better New Orleans all while earning money for school!! Literacy AmeriCorps New Orleans has full time openings beginning in September 2009 and ending August 2010. The greater New Orleans area suffers from low literacy levels that severely affect both the economic development of the region and the quality of life of its residents. The objective of these positions is to assist literacy providers in promoting individual opportunity and community well-being. We need your help, enthusiasm, dedication, and heart to help get things done here in New Orleans!
Duties:
• Provide instructional and tutorial support for adults in literacy, GED, English as a Second Language (ESL), Children’s/youth literacy, Adult Basic Education (ABE), and/or family literacy programs.
• Participate in all Literacy AmeriCorps member development meetings and training opportunities
• Participate monthly in service projects with other AmeriCorps team members
• Other duties pertaining to Literacy AmeriCorps goals as assigned
Qualifications:
• Ability to work with a team and independently
• Demonstrated interest in literacy, adult education, and community service
• Ability to work well with diverse populations
• Creativity, commitment, and problem-solving skills
• Strong communication skills
• Literacy education experience helpful, though not required
• Must be at least 17 years of age, and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• Excellent computer skills including word processing and database experience
• GED or high school diploma by end of program year
Benefits:
Literacy*AmeriCorps members will commit 11 months of their lives (September 2009 – August 2010) to serving in the program. Full-time memebrs commit to serve 1725 hours and work an average of at least 35-40 hours per week. Members will receive a living allowance of $1009 a month, health care benefits, as well as professional and personal development trainings during their year of service. Members who complete their service are eligible for an education award of $4725.(Please note that all figures are before taxes)
