Job Summary
The Assistant Controller assists the Controller in directing the accounting function for the Recovery School District. This includes, but is not limited to, the annual audit, payroll, general ledger, accounts receivable and accounts payable, cash disbursements and cash receipts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Other minor duties may be assigned.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:
• In conjunction with the Controller, is responsible for the maintenance of the chart of accounts in the accounting and payroll systems, and the accuracy of all data input.
• Assists the CFO in preparing the annual RSD budget and necessary amendments.
• Under the direction and together with the Controller and CFO, responds to various audit requests for the annual LLA audit and other Federal and State audits.
• Under the direction and together with the Controller, prepares various monthly, quarterly and annual reports which will be derived from the accounting system and prepared for management, BESE, Federal, State and local authorities.
• Prepares grant claims to Federal, State and other funding entities and prepares necessary journal entries for cash transfer.
• Prepares, reviews and submits financial reports as required by the School Administration and Federal, State and local agencies.
• Prepares and reviews budget to actual reports for dissemination to program administrators as well as for in-house use.
• Reconciles general ledger accounts, prepares correcting Journal Entries as necessary and submits for approval.
• Responsible for Cash Management of the RSD, daily reconciliations, and deposits.
• Acts as a liaison to the Treasury department on various issues.
• Ensures that deposits received from Charter Schools for shared services are communicated to the Accounts Receivable clerk and properly applied against the appropriate account.
• Performs other related duties as necessary to support RSD management and organization.
Qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.
A. Education and Experience
Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance
• At least five years of work experience in accounting
Preferred:
• MBA or other advanced degree or certification
• CPA certification
• Audit experience
B. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required
• Work to obtain LASBO Certification within a two year period.
• Expertise in Microsoft Excel and Word and proficiency in other Microsoft Office applications.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in financial management, specifically accounting.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skill in general ledger, accounts receivable, and accounts payable functions.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to coordinate, prioritize and manage a variety of diverse and complex tasks and systems.
• Ability to complete tasks efficiently and with attention to detail.
• Demonstrated ability to keep detailed, accurate, and up to date records.
• Demonstrated flexibility and ability to effectively work in a team environment.
Requires some nights and weekends.
