Summary of Duties:
The Volunteer Coordinator will facilitate all initial communication with volunteers, help to connect them to the right programs and projects, and facilitate the overall experience of volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator will also support volunteer recruitment efforts for the organization. This is an 11 month AmeriCorps position beginning September 1, 2009.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Respond to email inquiries and phone inquiries from potential volunteers
• Explain organization and programs to interested parties.
• Connect volunteers to upcoming projects and project leaders, and opportunities on our online calendar.
• Provide an orientation to HandsOn for incoming volunteers.
• Develop and execute volunteer recruitment strategies with the Community Engagement program manager to recruit target volunteer groups: visiting, local, skilled, youth, leaders, etc.
• Provide general support to the Community Engagement Team.
• Help to maintain HandsOn’s project and volunteer database.
• Attend community events and neighborhood meetings to recruit volunteers.
• Develop and execute strategies to encourage volunteer reflection and retention
Qualifications:
• Deep commitment to volunteerism.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills including the ability to successfully communicate with people from diverse backgrounds.
• Familiarity with the internet, Microsoft Office, Google applications and ability to learn to use a basic database.
• Ability and willingness to make on-the-spot decisions and solve problems independently.
• Willingness to occasionally work abnormal hours
• Bachelor's degree or 2 years of experience coordinating volunteers
• Comfort level with public-speaking, and willingness to regularly attend community events to promote programs and recruit volunteers.
• Familiarity with New Orleans is preferred but not required.
• Reliable transportation
Compensation:
This is an AmeriCorps Position. Members must complete a minimum of 1700 hours of service. Members will receive a living stipend of $1250/month; health coverage; Mileage reimbursement; Upon completion of term Member will receive an education award of $4,725.
