Background on the Housing Program:

Since March of 2006, HandsOn New Orleans has provided an affordable home for visiting volunteers who come from around the world to help rebuild and revitalize New Orleans. For more information on our Volunteer House visit our website.

Purpose:

The Housing Coordinator will oversee the volunteer bunk house to ensure that it is operating in a smooth and efficient manner. The Housing Coordinator will be the face of HandsOn New Orleans within the housing site, helping to facilitate the housing community, ensure that shopping, cleaning and other house duties take place, and encouraging visiting volunteers to become advocates for Gulf Coast recovery. This is an 11 month AmeriCorps position beginning September 1, 2009.

Job Duties:

• Serve as the point of contact with potential visiting volunteers to explain the bunk house and its amenities.
• Manage the housing calendar and track the open beds left to be booked.
• Invoice incoming volunteers and maintain accurate records of when housing fees are paid.
• Ensure that all cleaning duties are completed on a regular basis.
• Delegate after hour housing tasks (orientation, dinner preparation, and community meetings) to Volunteer Leader On Duty.
• Onsite troubleshooting.
• Submit maintenance and repair requests.
• Support volunteers by answering questions.
• Shop for meals and housing supplies.
• Track monthly expenditures to ensure compliance with set budget.
• Develop weekly menus.
• Support Community Engagement Team when available.
• Attend HandsOn New Orleans meetings and trainings
• Support national advocacy by getting volunteers to fill out pledge cards.
• Continuously improve bunk house amenities by being receptive to volunteer suggestions.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree
• Friendly and outgoing demeanor.
• Reliable transportation and a clean driving record
• Applicant should be highly organized and be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
• Strong Commitment to and passion for volunteers and service work
• Good interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate successfully with people from diverse backgrounds.
• A familiarity with the New Orleans area is preferred.
• Some cash handling or experience with basic financial tracking preferred.
• Willingness to work a varying schedule; some nights and weekends.

Compensation:

This is an AmeriCorps Position. Members must complete a minimum of 1700 hours of service. Members will receive a living stipend of $1250/month; health coverage; Mileage reimbursement; Upon completion of term Member will receive an education award of $4,725.
