Position:
New Orleans College Prep is seeking a part-time Student Supports Intern interested in pursuing a career in education, counseling, social work, or art therapy. The intern will be assigned administrative responsibilities designed to provide exposure to school counseling and therapy, student supports, and data management. The Student Supports Intern will work directly with the art therapist/counselor to ensure that the best possible counseling is in place to support student achievement in the classroom every day.

Background:
New Orleans College Prep’s mission is to prepare each of its students to enter and excel in a rigorous four-year college or university. The School opened for an entering class of sixth graders in August 2007 and has grown ambitiously to 850 students in grade K-10 in the 2011-2012 school year. We will add a grade every year eventually serve grades K-12. NOCP is also planning to expand its services to open additional K-12 campuses throughout New Orleans. On June 30, 2010, NOCP was the only 3rd-year New Orleans charter school to receive a full 2 year extension to its charter, satisfying all academic and financial requirements of the state.
NOCP was selected as one of 22 out of 179 schools nation-wide to be recognized and honored by New Leaders for New Schools’ Effective Practice Incentive Community (EPIC) program for its significant student achievement gain on the iLEAP Louisiana state achievement tests in 2008-09. NOCP was the only school in Louisiana selected for recognition. In addition, NOCP students performed in the top 7 out of 46 open enrollment public schools in New Orleans on the 2010 8th Grade LEAP exams, with a passing percentage that was double the RSD average. Our goal is nothing short of 100% college readiness for each of our students. We believe in the power of high expectations for every one of our students to excel academically, succeed in college, and become the future leaders of our city and nation.
Job Expectations:
•Assist in tracking student attendance, making phone calls to parents, and cooperating with parents to increase student attendance.
•Create documents and spreadsheets to aid in data management.
•Coordinate with outside agencies to provide services for students and families.
•Conduct home visits to aid in the counseling of students and families.
•Prepare art materials for counseling sessions.
•Help with the planning and implementation of positive behavior support systems and rewards for students. •Assist Director of Student Supports and Principal as necessary with tasks that will ensure that the best possible counseling is in place to support student achievement in the classroom every day.
•Work a flexible schedule of 20+ hours per week.
Qualifications:
•Must have a college degree.. Current grad student in counseling or public health preferred.
•Counseling or art therapy experience preferred.
•Basic art skills preferred.
•Previous experience with Microsoft Outlook (scheduling, calendar, contact functions), Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
•Proficiency in grammar and editing documents , ability to organize materials in a logical and compelling manner.
•Well-developed and demonstrated interpersonal and customer service skills and ability to work in team environment.
•Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and project a positive image via phone or in person.
•Ability to learn quickly, follow through on directions and work unsupervised on multiple projects and meet deadlines.
•Must have access to transportation in order to make home visits.
Compensation:
This is a part-time position; you will receive a $5,000 stipend broken down into bi-monthly payments over the course of the school term.
