The Scott S. Cowen Institute for Public Education Initiatives at Tulane University is seeking an Advanced Placement Summer Institute Director.
As part of its commitment to teacher professional development, the Cowen Institute recognized a need for summer training in the local region. Tulane University has been selected by the College Board as an official Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) site for 2010. The Cowen Institute seeks a Director for this program. The APSI will draw middle and high school teachers from all over the region. The inaugural program will consist of week-long courses in June and July. The seasonal position will begin in February 2010 and will conclude in August 2010.
Reporting to the Program Manager of AdvanceNOLA, the Advanced Placement Summer Institute Director will be responsible for planning the APSI and for recruiting attendees. The successful Director will establish and support relationships with lead master teachers from all over the United States; higher education faculty members from Tulane University and other institutions; local public, private, and parochial high schools; and take a lead role in directing and coordinating the first-year Advanced Placement Summer Institute at Tulane University.
Position Description:
• Event planning: Work with Tulane’s Director of Finance & University Conferences to coordinate logistics for the APSI, including transportation, housing, conference facilities, and catering.
• Course development: Recruit master teachers for up to 20 courses (in coordination with the Program Manager). Maintain data gathering tools including evaluations, review trends in course needs, and respond accordingly. Create new tools as needed. Develop budgets using pre-existing templates and carefully monitor course quality through evaluations.
• Promotion: Work with the Cowen Institute’s communications team to develop the program brochure and online registration site. Monitor the APSI website to ensure that the content is current and is easily accessible to teachers and other users. Develop and manage the program brochure dissemination strategy. Provide support for the above programs in terms of registration by working with school districts and individuals registering for the program
Qualifying background experiences:
• Undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university required.
• Event planning for conferences of at least 200 people required.
• Familiarity with Advanced Placement courses and programs required.
• Experience in administering programs for educators preferred.
• High school teaching or counseling experience preferred.
Qualifying skills:
• Event planning and management
• Expertise with database, spreadsheet, and word processing software programs
• Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
• Excellent organizational and time management skills, good judgment, and ability to work on multiple tasks and a variety of projects simultaneously
• Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping skills
• Ability to set priorities, follow through on multiple tasks, and meet strict deadlines with minimum supervision
• Public speaking skills
